1. Grammar Review: Meet the Rebels

When you start learning Spanish, you quickly realize that not all words follow the rules. Some verbs change completely and do not follow any pattern. We call these the "Total Rebels"!

The three biggest rebel verbs in the Spanish present tense are SER (to be), ESTAR (to be), and IR (to go). Let's memorize their forms:

SER (to be)
Identity, origin, professions

Yo: soy
Tú: eres
Él/Ella/Ud.: es
Nosotros: somos
Vosotros: sois
Ellos/Uds.: son

ESTAR (to be)
Locations, temporary states

Yo: estoy
Tú: estás
Él/Ella/Ud.: está
Nosotros: estamos
Vosotros: estáis
Ellos/Uds.: están

IR (to go)
Movement

Yo: voy
Tú: vas
Él/Ella/Ud.: va
Nosotros: vamos
Vosotros: vais
Ellos/Uds.: van

Read the short text about Luis and his wife. Pay attention to the verbs SER, ESTAR, and IR. Then, answer the questions in Spanish.

El fin de semana

"¡Hola! Yo soy peruano y mi esposa es chilena. Nosotros tenemos dos hijos. Hoy, nosotros estamos en la oficina porque tenemos mucho trabajo. Pero el domingo, mi esposa y yo vamos al zoológico. Para ir al centro siempre voy en transporte público, soy una persona comprometida con el medio ambiente. ¡Y en la noche vamos a la fiesta de Marcos!"

Teacher's Note

Remember that SER and ESTAR both mean "to be" in English, but in Spanish, they have completely different uses. Don't mix them up! If you are talking about where you are right now, always use ESTAR. If you are talking about who you are, always use SER.
