PART 1: The Golden Rules of Spanish Questions

Rule 1: Double Question Marks (¿...?)

Spanish is the only language that uses an inverted question mark (¿) at the beginning of a question, and a standard one (?) at the end.
Ejemplo: ¿Cómo te llamas? (not just Cómo te llamas?)

Rule 2: The Written Accent (Tilde)

All question words must carry a written accent mark (´) on the stressed syllable. If you remove the accent, the word changes its meaning!
que (that / which — relative) ➔ ¿qué? (What? — question word)
como (as / like — comparison) ➔ ¿cómo? (How? — question word)

PART 2: Question Words — Template & Explanations
Question Word English When to Use Example
¿Qué? What? Ask for definitions, explanations, or general info. ¿Qué es esto?
(What is this?)
¿Cuál? / ¿Cuáles? Which? / What? Ask for a specific choice from a set of options. ¿Cuál prefieres?
(Which do you prefer?)
¿Quién? / ¿Quiénes? Who? Ask about people (Quién = one person, Quiénes = many). ¿Quiénes son ellos?
(Who are they?)
¿Dónde? Where? Ask for the location of something or someone. ¿Dónde vives?
(Where do you live?)
¿Adónde? To where? Ask about a destination (used with verb ir). ¿Adónde vas?
(Where are you going?)

Question Word English When to Use Example
¿De dónde? From where? Ask about origin or nationality. ¿De dónde eres?
(Where are you from?)
¿Cuándo? When? Ask about time, dates, or events. ¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños?
(When is your birthday?)
¿Por qué? Why? Ask for reasons or motives behind an action. ¿Por qué estudias español?
(Why do you study Spanish?)
¿Cómo? How? Ask about conditions, processes, or how someone is. ¿Cómo estás?
(How are you?)
¿Cuánto/a/os/as? How much/many? Agrees in gender & number with the noun described. ¿Cuántos años tienes?
(How old are you?)
PART 3: Spanish vs. English: Key Comparisons

A. Qué vs. Cuál — The "What" Dilemma

In English we say "What is your name?" — but in Spanish you cannot say ¿Qué es tu nombre? because Qué is used for definitions. You must use Cuál, because you ask the person to identify their specific name.

Incorrect: ¿Qué es tu nombre?
(Asks for the definition of a name)
Correct: ¿Cuál es tu nombre?
(Asks to identify your specific name)

B. Por qué vs. Porque — Why vs. Because

They sound similar but are written differently — and mean opposite things!

¿Por qué? (Two words + accent) ➔ Why?
Porque (One word, no accent) ➔ Because

Ejemplo: ¿Por qué no vienes? — Porque estoy ocupada. (Why aren't you coming? — Because I am busy.)

C. Cuánto — How Much / How Many (Gender & Number Agreement!)

Cuánto (Masc. Sing.) Cuánta (Fem. Sing.) Cuántos (Masc. Plur.) Cuántas (Fem. Plur.)
dinero agua años hermanas
¿Cuánto dinero tienes? ¿Cuánta agua necesitas? ¿Cuántos años tienes? ¿Cuántas hermanas tienes?
