"Si lo hubiera sabido antes, todo habría cambiado..."
How to build the Past Perfect Subjunctive
It works just like the English "I had eaten", but we use it when a Subjunctive Trigger (weirdo) forces the change.
It has two parts. You only conjugate the first part (Haber). The second part never changes.
Use this for past regrets, impossible hypotheses, or feelings about past events.
| Pronoun | Option A (Most Common) |
Option B (Literary) |
|---|---|---|
| Yo | hubiera | hubiese |
| Tú | hubieras | hubieses |
| Él / Ella | hubiera | hubiese |
| Nosotros | hubiéramos Accent! | hubiésemos |
| Ellos / Uds. | hubieran | hubiesen |
Yes, Spanish has two forms for the Imperfect Subjunctive: -RA and -SE.
You can use either, but -RA (hubiera) is much more common in daily speech in Latin America and Spain.
Don't forget the accent mark on "hubiéramos". It's easy to miss, but it changes the pronunciation.
This part is easy because it never changes regardless of the person (yo, tú, nosotros...). It works exactly like the Present Perfect ("he comido").
Hablar → Hablado
Comer → Comido
Vivir → Vivido

Spoken Spanish
Textbooks say you must use the Conditional ("Habría") in the second part.
But in everyday conversation (and even literature), native speakers often replace the Conditional with another Past Perfect Subjunctive ("Hubiera").
The Result:
"It sounds softer, less formal, and very natural."
